Biography
Cid Reyes is a unique combination of a Filipino artist and art critic, with an impressive body of work in both areas. After earning a bachelor's degree in liberal arts from De La Salle University, he received an Italian government grant to study painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He then attended the City Lit Institute in London, England, to study art history.
His first solo show was in 1969 at Joy Dayrit's Print Gallery, and since then, he has had exhibitions at Solidaridad Gallery, The Hyatt Hotel, West Gallery, The Drawing Room, Ricco-Renzo Gallery, and Galerie Astra, totaling 20 solo shows.
As an art critic, Reyes' achievements include winning the Grand Prize in an AAP art criticism competition. He is renowned for his landmark book of interviews, "Conversations on Philippine Art," and his decade-long (1995-2004) weekly art column, "Gallery Hopping," in TODAY, where he wrote over 500 art reviews. He has also authored coffee-table books for National Artists Arturo Luz, BenCab, J. Elizalde Navarro, and Napoleon V. Abueva, as well as numerous art books on Malang, Augusto Albor, and others. Notably, he wrote "GINTO: The 50th Anniversary Book of The Saturday Group."
Reyes has co-authored "TANAW: The Central Bank Art Collection" and "The Life and Art of Lee Aguinaldo," both of which received the Alfonso T. Ongpin Award for Best Book on Art. His recent books focus on Betsy Westendorp, a Spanish artist based in Manila, and the MVP Group of Companies Art Collection. He is currently working on books highlighting glass sculptors Ramon Orlina, Prudencio Lamarroza, Roy Veneracion, and Lydia Velasco.
In 1979, the Art Association of the Philippines (AAP) honored Reyes with the "Best in Art Criticism Award." He also received the "Most Outstanding Kapampangan in the Arts" award from the Pampanga government in 2015. In 2021, his coffee-table book "MVP: The Man and His Art" received a Gold Trophy from the Stevie International Business Awards, making it the first Philippine art book to achieve international acclaim and create history.
