Biography
Deejai Tanji is a self-taught visual artist from Legazpi City, Albay, who has been painting since 2008. She studied Psychology in Ateneo de Naga. A writer by heart, Deejai is also a proud mother of four, and a cancer warrior who believes that every life carries a story worth telling. Long before she picked up a paintbrush, she found her voice through words, writing whimsical and surreal pieces inspired by the world around her. Today, she paints with that same storyteller's soul.
Working primarily in acrylic, Deejai is recognized for her signature swirling forms, vibrant colors, and compositions rich with depth and dimension. Her works blend whimsical imagination with the sensual elegance of native Filipina allure, creating paintings that celebrate femininity, resilience, and the enduring beauty of Filipino culture.
Deeply rooted in her heritage, she proudly weaves Bicolano elements into many of her artworks. Whether through intricate patterns, vibrant colors, local landscapes, or subtle cultural symbols, each painting becomes a heartfelt tribute to the region that shaped her. A proud Bicolana, she believes art is one of the most meaningful ways to preserve culture, honor identity, and keep stories alive for future generations.
Beyond the canvas, Deejai is a passionate advocate and inspirational speaker. She is frequently invited to schools, organizations, and community events to share her journey as a cancer warrior, promote health awareness, inspire young people to pursue their dreams, and empower women to embrace their strength and purpose. Through her advocacies, cultural work, and community outreach, she has become one of Bicol's recognized women influencers, admired not only for her creativity but also for her heart for service and her commitment to making a meaningful difference in people's lives.
Although much of her artistic career has centered on commissioned works, she has participated in several local exhibitions and has been recognized with the MUKNS Excellence Award in Merit (2024) and the Outstanding Visual Artist Award (2025).
A writer long before she became a painter, Deejai continues to dream beyond the canvas. She hopes to publish a book chronicling her cancer journey and a book about Joroan, a place she holds dearly that opened her eyes to Art, where nature's beauty and deep devotion intertwine to create a sanctuary for the soul.
Deejai hopes to inspire others to embrace their scars, celebrate their heritage, and discover that life's most beautiful masterpieces are often created from its most difficult chapters...because even broken crayons can still color.
