Jose III "Joey" Galang

Joey Galang is an artist who experiments with different styles and forms. He draws inspiration from daily experiences, finding beauty in simple subjects, and paints from a background of his own family experience.

He was born in Novaliches, Quezon City, and was raised in Concepcion, Tarlac where he grew up with his grandparents.

Joey received a Certificate in Fine Arts from the University of the Philippines and worked as an assistant artist for Maestro Fernando Sena for three years. As an apprentice, Joey learned different styles but enjoyed painting realism in his early work. He is famous for his plays on lights and colors, and is thankful for the knowledge that he learned from his teacher.

 

He is inspired by Fernando Botero's paintings and sculptures where he finds simple subjects depicted in an exaggerated and energetic manner.

Aside from Botero, he also likes the works of Vincent Van Gogh. He is fascinated by Van Gogh's works that appear to be simple paintings but depict intricate details in brush works and the use of colors of everyday subjects such as flowers, nature, and landscape.

 

As an artist, he doesn't want to be confined to one style. He likes to explore introducing figurative aspects into realism by adding layers to simple subjects such as flowers, birds, and nature in his compositions. He believes that his works should fit the modern, world; thus he is constantly pursuing themes that would contribute to his works evolving into fresh and contemporary art.

So far, Joey has held two solo exhibits and participated in close to a dozen group exhibits.
