Biography
Rodolfo “Dolpee” Alcantara, born on January 8, 1972 in Taytay, Rizal, is a celebrated Filipino visual artist whose innovative approach to painting has earned recognition both locally and internationally. At the age of three, his family moved to Angono, immersing him in the country’s “Art Capital,” where creativity and tradition shaped his artistic journey.
Initially pursuing architecture at the Technological Institute of the Philippines, Alcantara discovered his true calling through workshops with master Larry Alcala. He later refined his craft under the mentorship of Nemi Miranda and Manuel Unidad, who encouraged him to develop a distinct style marked by discipline and originality.
His career began with the Angono Junior Ateliers, where he actively joined competitions and exhibits. Leadership soon followed, as he became president of the Angono Ateliers Association, one of the town’s oldest art groups. He also worked as an in-house artist for the National Power Corporation, earning the title Artist of the Year, before dedicating himself fully to painting. Over the years, he has mounted seven solo exhibitions, including Daloy (2018), which showcased his mastery of stylized pointillism.
Alcantara’s signature style, “stylized pointillism,” blends dots, cubes, and lines into vibrant compositions depicting Filipino life, rural landscapes, and universal themes of love and family. Inspired by National Artist Hernando R. Ocampo, he transformed pointillism into a uniquely Filipino expression. His Mother and Child Series (2023) portrays faceless figures symbolizing nurture and duty, while Pearl (2024) demonstrates his ability to create powerful focal points.
Recognized with numerous awards, including Resorts World’s Ultimate Jeepney Design Competition and first prize in the Rizal Federation Artists’ Painting Competition, Alcantara continues to inspire younger generations. Today, he stands as a vital figure in Angono’s thriving art scene, blending tradition with innovation and ensuring its legacy remains vibrant.
