Joe Hilario is a self-taught artist who grew up in various parts of Metro Manila. He was a former comics illustrator who looked up to Fernando Amorsolo, Sofronio "SYM" Mendoza, and other Western Impressionists, particularly admiring their use of colors and brushstrokes.

His works have been shown at various notable venues and are known for his characteristic use of light and impressionistic detail. His latest paintings of rural scenes reflect his longing for the simple life.

He is also a founding member of Impimatura, a group of formally trained artists.
